Photosynthesis lab
We have studying photosynthesis and how plants use it. We did a lab in class to see how plants use carbon and turn it into oxygen. For this lab we used a hole puncher to make holes in leaves, then we put the small leaf circles in a syringe. Once the leaves were in the syringe we added water into the syringe. We made a vacuum in the syringe and spun it in circles until all of the leaves sink. once they all sunk we added them to a clear cup full of a bicarbonate mixture and shined a light on them. We did this so the leaves would start to use the carbon in the water and the light to make oxygen and then start to float. I used a white light to shine on my leaves and they all floated within 30 min, other kids used a yellow, black, and red and blue light. Out of all of the ones I saw the white light and the red and blue light worked the best. I think the red and blue light would have worked the best because that is the light that plants absorb the best.
Monocot vs dicot mini project
We have been studding monocots and dicots for the past couple weeks in class. To study this we looked at corn seeds and mung bean seeds. We had to say witch one was a monocot and witch one was a dicot. I found the bean to be a monocot and the corn to be a dicot. The bean was the monocot because everything is inside it before they grow. When you split the bean you can see the leafs and the steam. The corn was the dicot because it has two cotyledons and it produces on leaf after another.
planting seeds
In class about 2 weeks ago we planted Corn seeds and mung bean seeds. We planted these seeds in a plastic cup and paper towels. We took notes on these plants every class. We did this to see how each plant grew and which one grew better with the things that we did to them. I gave the plants water for a couple of days than I changed to simple green cleaning. The plants grew the same in the water as they did in the simple green. When they got bigger I added some purple food coloring to the water and tissue paper. I did this so you can see the veins of the plant. The food coloring was supposed to make it so you can see the ways the water travels around the plant. It didn't really work, It only made to color of the plant darker. Some of the biggest changes that I saw was that the bean plant started to make little beans but they died while they where attached to the plant.
