end of year project reflection
This project was all about sustainability and ways that we can make the school more sustainable. At the beginning when this project was introduced the whole 9th grade class went on a feild trip over to twin buites and looked at the ways that they are trying to make a lot of the houses sustainable. After the trip we came back to the school and I thought that the idea that we would be making something for the school to improve the way the school functions would be pretty cool.
Through the mouths of working on this project we have had a lot of guest speakers and we have had a couple of field trips. Going on these field trips I learned what sustainability was and how we can implement that into our lives more. Listing to these guest speakers and doing their activities that they had planned I learned how to make something sustainable.
When I think of a sustainable house or a sustainable feature I have two different definitions. When I think of a sustainable house I think of something that can take of itself and the person that owns the house doesn't pay for electricity. When I think if a feature I think of something that can last for a long time with heavy use and doesn't need any matanese.
When we did the empathy interviews almost everyone that we interviewed liked to be outside and my original plan was to be outside. The only thing that I changed about my design was the safety part of it. Some people were concerned with the safety of having a Mini ramp. I changed the material that we covered the Mini ramp in.
This project gave all of the students a ton of freedom and creative space. I used this to come get together with a few friends to work on a Mini ramp and our group merged with a couple sophomores and seniors. When we all met up we started to come up with ideas to make our Mini ramp better, We came up with a way to make our Mini ramp weatherproof so it will last longer.
Some of the things that I help out with is building a cutting the wood for out ramp. At the begging I was cutting the wood so it would fit in the ramp to make the skeleton of the ramp. I also helped out screwing in the screws to keep it all together, and i helped out with anything that people needed.
One of the 21st century skills that I feel like I have grown in the most is collaboration. I think I have grown as a collaborator throughout the year because of the size of all of the projects. This has been the biggest project that we have done all year and had a lot of people in my group and so we all had some big responsibilities and I had a hard time trusting some of the people in my group because I've never met them before. Once we all started to get to know each other than I trusted everyone.
A issue that we had that I fixed in our group was when we were cutting the transitions with the jigsaw, the wood would shake and we couldn't cut. I went to the makers space and grabbed some clamps to clamp the wood to the table so it wouldn't shake as much and it would be easier to cut.
A issue that we had that I was not able to fix was when we had to draw the transitions we were having a hard time keeping the line strate while we had to curve it. The wood was very bumpy and often times the pencil would get stuck in a crack in the wood and mess up our line.
At the beginning of the project I thought success was having something at the school that was sustainable and could take care if its self. Now I think success is having something that will improve the time that the students have at school and that will last a long time.
If I was asked to give a student advise who was about to do this project I would tell them to manage their time better. We had a lot of time to work on this project and we just had a hard time getting people to sponsor us to get materials to use and we ran out of time.
